MY story
My Journey with Dance: From Escape to Empowerment
Dance has been in my heart for as long as I can remember. As a child, it was everything—I poured myself into it. I didn’t know how to be anything other than a dancer. At the same time, I struggled with a nervous disorder, and movement became my medicine. Every day after school I went to our local dance studio and took a dance class. My weekends soon filled with dance competitions and conventions. Dance was the only space where I felt free, confident, and truly joyful.
Pursuing dance as a career felt like chasing a wild dream—and somehow, I caught it. I moved to Los Angeles, signed with an agent, and found myself dancing in music videos, commercials, live events, and world tours. I was surrounded by amazing people, and for a while, it felt like I was living on cloud nine for ten years.
But after a decade, the burnout set in. I got stiff on money, fired for being too skinny and sexually harassed at gigs. I didn’t have much of a voice. I couldn’t say No if I didn’t want to wear a costume that I thought was too revealing. You were fired, replaced and left broke. I was surviving, not thriving. The industry lost its sparkle. I felt I wanted change. I felt like…
I didn’t want to dance anymore.
I cut off friends, unfollowed dancers online—I couldn’t even bear to watch people move. But just as I was stepping away from the industry, my close friend Bella started a nonprofit for women who had experienced sexual abuse. She used dance as a way to help them reclaim power over their bodies. Around that time, I had just begun to face my own history of sexual trauma. When Bella asked me to be part of a documentary sharing our stories through movement, I said yes.
Dancing in that documentary cracked something open in me. I had spent so many years giving myself away—on stage, in relationships, in silence. But through that experience, I saw myself clearly: I was a survivor.
That’s when dance began to heal me.
I stepped away from dance as a profession. I needed space. I explored new passions, found a new career, and gave myself time to breathe. Then the world shut down during COVID. Life slowed down, and so did I. I felt stuck and lost. One day, I started dancing again—just in my living room. No mirrors. No audience. Just me.
And something shifted. I came back to life.
I was dancing for myself again. Not for applause. Not for approval. Just for the joy of it.
That’s when I truly understood the power of dance.
Years passed, and I kept meeting women who would say, “I wish I felt good dancing. I wish I could feel good in my body.”
So here I am.
I now teach dance classes designed to help women and femmes reconnect with their bodies. We move our hips, roll our spines, touch our skin, and awaken something deep within. My classes aren’t about performing—they’re about feeling. About coming home to yourself.
Because dance is joy.
And we all deserve more joy in our lives.
